A World Powered by Crystal

Long before the evacuation, the Corvane had learned to draw extraordinary power from the blue crystals buried within their world. The crystals drove machines, weapons, industry and the great steam-powered technologies on which Corvane civilisation increasingly depended.

But they were not alone beneath the surface. Deep below the Corvane kingdoms lived an older subterranean people: the Lethrim. They too understood the power locked within the earth, and the two peoples had never truly trusted one another.

The Day the Sky Changed

Then came the disaster. Somewhere amid the vast stores of crystal and machinery, something went catastrophically wrong. Energy tore through the land. Cities were shattered. The air became polluted and dangerous. Entire regions were rendered uninhabitable in a matter of hours.

No surviving record gives a single uncontested answer for what caused it. The Corvane blamed the Lethrim for mishandling crystal technology beneath the world. The Lethrim claimed the Corvane had stockpiled more power than they could control.

The Last Flight

With the surface dying around them, the Corvane made an impossible decision: leave the world that had shaped them.

Those who could be saved were gathered aboard the Avrix, an immense ark and warship built to carry the remnants of Corvane civilisation beyond the poisoned atmosphere. Families, soldiers, engineers and rulers crowded into its decks as the world below disappeared beneath cloud, smoke and ruin.

Not everyone escaped. Not everything could be carried. Kingdoms became memories, possessions became relics, and the planet itself became something seen only from orbit.

The Avrix Became Their Refuge

For a century the Corvane endured above their own world. Generations lived and died within the Avrix. They preserved what history they could, rebuilt what technology remained and watched the planet below.

Time changed memory into argument and argument into legend. The catastrophe remained an open wound. Beneath the ruins, the old enemy had survived.

Eventually, the Corvane could no longer remain above forever.
